MEDICAL FAQs

Havelock

1. Accidents

If you have an accident and it’s not on a day when the Medical Centre is open in Havelock, or you can’t get an appointment there and you think you may need an x-ray, then you can go directly to the Urgent Care Centre at Wairau hospital.

2. Do I visit Havelock Medical Centre or Springlands Health?
When you enrol at Havelock or Springlands you can be seen at either surgery, they operate as one clinic. Currently they are running a waiting list which is reviewed every month. A GP is sent out from town to run the Havelock clinic and they try to provide continuity with the same GPs working in Havelock each week.

3. Are telephone consultations available?
There is a dedicated nursing phone line at Springlands that is available 5 days a week. If you think you would benefit from a phone consult from your GP as opposed to a consult in the surgery, they can arrange this for you too. Give them a call to discuss this.

4. Repeat Prescriptions
To order a script, ring and speak to the receptionist.  Please allow 48 hours from the time you talk to them until you receive your script. Yes, it does sometimes take this long!

5. Blood Tests
Medlab South provides a Medical Collection Clinic blood test service on Wednesday mornings at the Havelock Medical Centre from 8:45am - 9:45am.  This can be used by anyone with a GP referral (blood test form).  You don't have to be a patient of the Havelock Medical Centre to use this service.  It's necessary to book a time by calling the centre first.  Sometimes the clinic does not run as there are too few patients booked in.  If this is happening you will be contacted and a re-booking made.

6. Don’t lose touch
Sometimes people move, they change phones, the get rid of their landlines, they get new email addresses. If you make a change, don’t forget about telling the Medical Centre.

7.  I have just turned 16.
When you turn 16 years old, you need to sign your own enrolment form. Your GP might send this out to you or ask you to sign one next time you come into the Medical Centre.

ENROLMENT

1. What is the difference between being eligibility for publicly funded health services and entitlement to enrol.
All New Zealand citizens are eligible for publicly funded health services, but some New Zealanders may not be entitled to enrol in a PHO. For example, a New Zealand citizen who is living overseas and returns to New Zealand on holiday is eligible for publicly funded health services but may not be entitled to enrol in a PHO. To be entitled to enrol the person would need to meet the enrolment criteria of residing permanently in NZ and plan to use the provider as his/her regular and ongoing provider of general practice services.

2. What is the definition of residing permanently in NZ?
To be entitled to enrol, an eligible person must also be residing permanently in NZ. A person will be considered to be residing permanently in NZ if he/she intends to be resident in NZ for at least 183 days in the next 12 months.

3. How to enrol
To enrol, you will have to complete and sign a form which the doctor, nurse or Medical Centre receptionist will give you. The form will require you to provide some personal details such as name, age, date of birth, address and ethnicity. The information collected at enrolment is subject to the Privacy Act 1993 and the Health Information Privacy Code 1994, so the privacy of your information is protected.

4. What happens if I go to another General Practice?
You can go to another general practice or change to a new general practice at any time. If you are enrolled in a PHO through one general practice and visit another practice as a casual patient, you will pay a higher fee for that visit. So, if you have more than one general practice you should consider enrolling with the practice you visit most often.

5. What happens if I am enrolled in a general practice but don’t see them very often?
If you have not received services from your general practice in a 3-year period it is likely that the practice will contact, you and ask if you wish to remain with the practice. If you are not able to be contacted or do not respond your name will be taken off the Practice and PHO Enrolment Registers. You can re-enrol with the same general practice or another general practice and the affiliated PHO at a later time.
